The Retired Greyhound Trust
Medway Greyhound Support.

For all new, old or potential greyhound owners there is a support group who meet on the first Sunday of every month at 10.30am outside the Visitors Centre at Riverside Country Park, Lower Rainham Road, Rainham, Kent.
It is being run by John Homer and you can visit his website to get more information and see some pictures of the day by
clicking here, looking below or you can contact John on 01634 403914 or e-mail him on rgtmedwaysupport@aol.com
Their aim is to support the owners and their greys to socialise the new greys to other breeds and generally have a good time.

Sponsored Walk 6th April 2008

It was a cold snowy morning and Lindsay and I debated long and hard about going to this walk as we thought nobody would turn out but we decided we had better go as we were helping out with our tents once again.
April (our greyhound) had yet another corn which was giving her jip so we decided not to take her along this time.
The drive to the Park didn't look promising and as you can see from
the photo the M2 motorway hadn't even been gritted!

When we eventually arrived at the Riverside Country Park there were already some of the regulars there waiting!
When John and Jean turned up we set about putting up the tents so we had somewhere to shelter and by the time we had finished people started arriving and by the start of the walk there were about 65 people and 55 dogs which given the weather was an impressive turnout and a credit to John and Jean and everyone who turned up!

Below is the email John sent me after the walk :-

Hi
Once again Bill and Lindsay saved the day with their gazebo and help. To Lynn Munday who back up the walk by bringing the animal ambulance (in case of heat stroke) I am also indebted to Fred and Maggie, Ann and Bob, Terry who took the photo's and all the supporters of RGT Medway, who despite the snow and the cold help to put up the gazebo's and make the walk a success!
Thank you all!

I am attaching some of the photo's that Terry took on the day.
In spite of the weather it was an impressive turn out with owners coming from as far a field as Haywards Heath and Brighton! There were about 65 people and 55 dogs!
I had a number of phone calls from those unable to make the walk and they will be sending on donations.
On the day we collected £425 and with sponsorship still to come in we should reach over £750! The proceeds of which will go to RGT Croftview and Sittingbourne RGT.

The next sponsored walk will be held on Sunday 7th September 2008, the proceeds of which will go to RGT National and Pets As Therapy (Poster Attached)
He above miss heard me, I requested nice weather so that the day would flow but he had not got his hearing aid turned up so for nice read ice and for flow read snow!

Take Care All

We have just received some sad news about Ivy the Fawn greyhound in the black coat and yellow rosette in the pictures above.
Sadly Ivy passed away on the morning of the 24th April 2008 aged fourteen and a half, below is the email we received from Louise and Darren.

Hi

I hope I'm emailing the correct person! We attended the sponsored walk at the Country Park on the 6th April. I would like to thank you for a lovely morning and the kindness showed to our very elderly greyhound Ivy. She thoroughly enjoyed meeting all the other greyhounds, and it means so much to us now, as sadly this morning she passed away. She went peacfully, but at 14 and a half, her old legs just couldn't take it any more. I'm so glad she had the chance to come down and see every one, snow or not! (the photographs on the website show her waiting patiently for her beef wearing a black coat and yellow rosette.)
Love to you all, and special hugs to all the greyhounds waiting for homes

Louise and Darren

6th January 2008

The 6th January saw the first monthly walk of 2008 and what a glorious day it was!

We were glad to see that although John keeps telling us he has ordered the weather, this time it came good!
The turn out was good with the old regulars and some new faces, we started off with a walk round the paddock with some of the greyhounds running free chasing each other and generally having a good time, then with Christmas just a distant memory it was off on the walk proper and for only the second time since we started coming along to these walks the tide was actually in, hiding all that horrible slimy mud making the view all the more pleasant!

We did notice that there were a lot of spoilt pooches all sporting their new designer coats that they got for Christmas with Fred's dogs looking like a couple of poofs... (sorry Fred but you did say that's what they looked like in their suede coats).
I must admit I had the 'Only Fools and Horses Theme tune' running through my head. hahaha

Sponsored Walk 16th September 2007

Today was our sponsored Walk in aid of the The Wisdom Hospice and The Retired Greyhound Trust at the Countryside Park in Gillingham Kent.
Once again the weather was glorious for the sponsored walk.
There was a good turnout with many ex-residents coming along to join the dogs from the Kennels.
The dogs all behaved impeccably in spite of the temptation of small dogs and seagulls!!

Before the pictures there are some special votes of thanks to John Homer for organising the event. You can contact John on 01634 403914 or e-mail rgtmedwaysupport@aol.com

Also to all the staff and dogs from Croftview Kennels and Bill and Lindsay Buckley from Sittingbourne RGT for the behind the scene support in sourcing rosettes and other equipment for the day!

The money raised so far is £594 with pledges still to come in, which in total should bring us to around £800..

Monthly Walk 2nd September 2007

It was another fine sunny day for our monthly walk.
It is nice to see people making this a regular part of their calendar and as always everyone was made to feel welcome by John and Jean before the walk which was very enjoyable.

I think the dogs like the treats they get at the end best of all and just come along to make us feel better about getting up early on a Sunday morning!

If you are thinking of homing a retired greyhound why not come along and test drive one of the walkers dogs.
Any breed of dog is welcome as it helps to socialise them and the greyhounds.

We look forward to seeing you there so put this in your diary (The first Sunday in every month).

Monthly Walk 6th May 2007

There was another fine turnout for the monthly walk, the weather was once again kind and there was a lot of new comers which was nice to see.
John was made aware that quite a few members of the public now come along to the Riverside Country Park walks on the first Sunday of every month just to see the greyhounds.
It was nice to see a growing band of regulars continuing to support the Medway Greyhound Support Group.
Medway Greyhound support now has it's own identity.
The new banner was used for the first time so the public knows who we are and what we are about.

It was a blustery, grey start to the day but the rain looked as if it was going to hold off for us all, and it very nearly did with just a slight drizzle during our walk around the Riverside Country Park in Rainham.
When we were on the home stretch the rain started to get a bit harder but this didn't seem to dampen the walkers or their dogs spirits at all and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves swapping stories and catching up on what has been happening since we last met.
We all made it back safely and collected our Rosettes and Certificates.
The certificates all 200 of them (just in case we needed them) were kindly donated by
Acorn Business Supplies in Aylesford so a big thank you go to them for helping out.
Cheryl Miller from Croftview turned up with her new trailer and several dogs from her kennels, the press came along to get a photo, which was nice, I think it was the Medway Gazzette but I'll let you know if I'm wrong and when it is going to be published.
It was another good turnout with 62 greyhounds in all and I'm glad to report that Sittingbourne RGT was very well represented with several of our homed dogs and their owners coming along to help support the event, it was nice to see Henry, Jumbo, Mandy and Mu again and their new families I mustn't forget them, and I must say again that they all looked very happy, healthy and in superb condition...... the dogs looked good as well HaHaHa!

John informs me that £644.21 was raised in total which was very good and a big thank you to everyone who turned up.

Some people forgot to pick up their rosettes and certificates and these will be available at the next meet on the first Sunday in April.

I didn't manage to get many photos this time as there was a lot going on so if anyone has some more please email them to me for inclusion on this page.
I appologise and will try harder next time it looks like there are not many greyhounds but there were 62 that turned up I assure you.

April's first meeting with the Support group

On Sunday 4th February we attended the monthly Greyhound Support Group with our retired greyhound April and were very pleased to meet some of the greyhounds we had helped home, Henry, Jumbo, Mandy and Charlene to name a few, they all looked happy, healthy and in superb condition.
We thoroughly enjoyed catching up their new family and hearing how they were coping with their retirement.

The weather was kind to us and 51 greyhounds turned up to show their support, a new record for the group.
We were made to feel very welcome and there was somebody with an interesting story to tell about their greyhound at every turn.
The walk started from the coffee shop and took about an hour, we went all around the park and along the river finally ending up back at the coffee shop for a well deserved cup of tea and slice of cake for us and treats of chicken and liver for the dogs with of course plenty of water available.
We will definately make these walks part of our routine and encourage everyone to come along to try it for themselves, you don't need a greyhound to join in any breed is welome.
Special note:- Don't forget the sponsored walk next month on March 4th, all proceeds will go to help the RGT and Croftview kennels. Lets see if we can break another record and get 100 greyhounds to come along and help give these lovable and rewarding dogs the future they deserve.
All credit goes to John and Jean for giving up their valuable time for this worthy cause.
